What does it mean for a priest to progress in knowledge? Firstly, it means that he believes that the Word, which is ever seeking to be incarnated in the world, draws out as well, from “the flesh of the world”, what words God has sown that help understand it. This is well-known to the one who believes that the Holy Spirit shepherds the world to what is good for it. Then, it means that, as Christians, we restrain ourselves in this life, in everything, except in giving love and seeking the knowledge that gives us to be strengthened more and more in giving love. Indeed, Paul said: “knowledge puffs up” (1 Corinthians 8:1). However, what he said in conclusion: “but love edifies”, clearly reveals that he did not intend to tolerate ignorance, but to prod us to place everything we are capable of, be it knowledge or other things, to serve eternal life. I congratulate you on obtaining your doctorate in religious sciences today. Let us always seek the meaning of the Word in you.
