Their Right to Life

A friend of mine told me about an interview that a media outlet carried out with a Palestinian child. Today, Palestine has not only remained the companion of our hearts and our prayers, but has also become the companion of every one of our gatherings, every passing or planned encounter. My friend tried to find me the interview on her phone. She said: “You have to see it for yourself”. She searched; but did not succeed. She promised me to look for it again for my sake. However, she compensated me by telling me herself some of the details of the interview. She said that the broadcaster asked the child various questions. He asked him about himself and about the war. The question, the answer to which nearly killed me, was: "What do you want to do when you grow up?" The child said with poignant confidence: “We do not grow up!” She ended her account of the interview, adding: “Tell me: Does any one of us have the right to grow up before the children of Palestine regain that they are capable of dreaming of a better life for themselves?” No, we have no right!
