The Marriage of Priests

A few days ago, I read a statement by the Metropolitan of Malta, Charles Scicluna, in which he called on the Church of Rome to seriously consider the marriage of its priests. The importance of Scicluna, in addition to his episcopal position and his prominence in knowledge, is that he is one of the advisors to the current Pope, and subsequently, one of the most prominent investigators into the crimes of sexual assault in the Western Church. In his statement, the Bishop of Malta relies on the fact that in the first millennium, the Church allowed the marriage of priests before their ordination, and on the tradition of the Eastern Churches that are in unity with Rome. The concept that Rome is talking about is that there is no dogmatic objection to a priest being married. However, she limits herself to her line of thinking that his celibacy allows him to devote himself entirely to the service of his church. Will the voices that support Scicluna prevail in liberating the priests in the West from this obligatory celibacy which one of the fathers of the Council of Nicaea (325) considered “a yoke that Christ did not impose”?
