The Fourth Psalm

The fourth psalm reveals that, for the worshiper, sleep is a gift, a gift from God and evidence of His peaceful presence with Him. Man is tired and distressed. When he seeks God’s face, God welcomes him. This summons the universe. Love consists of openness. The secret of prayer is that it is about seeking closeness and calling to a better world. The rebuking words that the psalmist utters in the face of his people do not appear to be arrogance or condemnation; rather, they are love that knows no bounds. This is the full wealth that reveals the gladness of the world to be nothing before it. What have you done today? What is the useful service that you have planted in the earth? The psalm does not remind us of ourselves, but of God Who strengthens our weakness, of God Who makes us partake in His salvation ministry. Go to sleep now. Your bed, for you, is an angel’s hands. Tomorrow, when the angel lays you down off his hands, a new job awaits you!
