My God, Why have You Forsaken Me?

This question is the opening of the twenty-first psalm. The exegetes held that, when Jesus said on the Cross, “My God, why have You forsaken Me!”, He was but praying this psalm. In the midst of pain, at the time of death, talking to God transcends everything that befalls us on earth, a testimony that He is the One Who is Living and Life-Giving. In His person, Jesus carries Man, in his utmost nakedness and sufferings, and ever proclaims that God is powerfully present where we feel abandoned. In the chronicles of the crucifixion, it is not mentioned that God had answered His Son's question. However, the answer is known. What Jesus did on the Cross, the bridegroom does: “a man will leave his father… and be united to his wife”. This is the feeling of the Bridegroom for Whom we have been singing, since the beginning of this week, awaiting His hour. Metropolitan George Khodr has said repeatedly: “No wedding takes place without blood.” This is the time of the great wedding!
