From One Victory to Another

She was sitting by the edge of a destroyed road, declaring, publicly, her victory over the war. She did not mean the whole war. The war is still raging in her country. But she meant the battle that she herself has been through. She said that she had prevailed. She was sincere, sincere before herself and the world to which she was sharing her news! She was holding between her small hands the signs of her victory: her school certificates which she had refused to leave their destroyed house without taking with her, namely, as she said, “the certificates of kindergarten, as well as first, second, third, fourth and fifth year", both hers and her brother’s. I heard her, she was speaking with a confidence and enthusiasm that only victors can understand. She said that her ambition is to become an engineer for the sake of Gaza, to rebuild Gaza, which is being destroyed by hatred. Victors are denoted by their ambition. They alone can tell about their coming victories. No one can defeat a people who lives from one victory to another!
