I read a few lines addressed to the priests by one of the leaders in the Western Churches, in which he wanted to remind them of the commitment to knowledge and obedience as a path to serving teaching and preaching in the Church. I will extract from the aforementioned lines a word that I find beneficial to us wherever we are, namely: “teaching is not about reinforcing viewpoints”. I will not conceal from you. This word led me to think about the crisis behind it. Is there any obstinacy in new discussions about matters faced by Churches in the West? Is it fear of the domination of ignorance?... I will leave the analysis to draw upon the general benefit of the word, for ourselves before anyone else. In a world that derives most of what it knows today from social media, our attention will be lost in more than one direction if we do not watch out for two things: of the commonplace that places itself at the level of the word, and of accepting offhandedly what others want us to know about our beliefs. This is a directive to choose faithfulness to the fundamental truths as a condition for conveying the word.
