Umm Muhammad

She is a lady who works in homes, here, in the province of Quebec. You want her in your home, you bring her from where she lives and take her back there. Umm Muhammad comes to my son’s house once every week or every other week. Here, this service is expensive. The poor are not exploited. Today, she shared a cup of coffee with me and insisted on telling me, with obvious pride, that she had quit smoking three days ago. With this piece of news, she justified some coughing that first caught her in front of me. Then she started telling about her and her family’s journey of suffering from the countryside of her beautiful city in Syria to Turkey, and to Canada. It was her husband who taught her to smoke. She said: “at first, I used to smoke two or three cigarettes. The suffering made me multiply the number ten times”. I asked her: “did anyone encourage you to make this decision?” She replied: “my little son. He literally said to me: “you have survived the war in Syria. Do not let the cigarette kill you in Canada!” Love commands”. My hope is that love will overcome all the sufferings of the earth.
