To Metropolitan Saba Esper

“You are a father, a brother and a friend” is not said of many people. May your faithfulness endure. I am writing to you after your election as Metropolitan (again) over the Archdiocese of New York and all North America. I am not discussing now the laws of your new diocese which allow, in the event of a vacancy, to nominate over her the Metropolitan of another diocese. What happened deserves to be accompanied by our prayers both for you and for her. Your love allows these words. Today, I am torn between two feelings, joy and sadness. The joy lies in the fact that you are ever worthy. But I am also saddened, especially by your moving away from us. I did not say your moving away solely from Hauran, but also from us all. What is intended for America, that is, to remain in Antioch, must always be intended for Antioch. The faithful person needs not be reminded. I see nothing for which we are expected to die like for Antioch to remain here, in Antioch. I know your wounds from the emptying of our countries, Syria, Lebanon and others. Carry these wounds with you wherever you are, lest Antioch become the Church that is scattered abroad. May you always be a father, a brother and a friend.
