Thomas Sunday

The Gospel passage read by our Church today on Thomas Sunday recounts two appearances of the risen Jesus (John 20:19-31). In the first appearance, Jesus reveals Himself alive to the disciples’ assembly, then in the second to Thomas, who was absent during the first appearance. Let us reflect a little on this salvific event. Why did Jesus return to the upper room just for Thomas' sake? He came to affirm to the disciples, in every generation, that His Church comes from His living manifestation to her, His manifestation to every member in her. Commitment is not to be founded on worldly purposes but on a Living God Whose constant work is to reveal Himself to His disciples, both collectively and individually. Acknowledging Him as "my Lord and my God" is the outcome of His appearance. There's no point for the subsequent generations to wish to have what the first disciples had. Jesus, in any time and place, manifests only as risen. The Living Christ is an unceasing moving forward, endless manifestations, a revelation that He is here, always here, for the life of the world.
