The theologian is a theologian wherever he may be. Theology flows out of him. You see it. You touch it. You hear it, whether he speaks in the Church or at home, or on the road… Once, Father Thomas Hopko (+2015) stopped a taxi. On the way, the taxi driver asked him: “are you a priest?”. He answered him. The cabbie then asked him: “do you consider yourself saved?”. He answered him also with the straightforwardness of the teacher: “yes. Christ became Incarnate for my sake. He died on the Cross for my sake. There is nothing more that God could possibly do for me. He did everything. I am redeemed. However, the sins I commit every day, show me to be an adversary who is not worthy of God’s redemption”! It was said: “the theologian is he who prays”. By saying what he said, Father Hopko added: “it is he who constantly repents to God’s mercy”!
