I will pick for you, from the garden of St. Maximus the Confessor, his saying: “Blessed is the man who has learnt to love all men equally”. Words about the one love do not originate from a human being, and even no human being is capable of it on his own. The Confessor Saint did not say: “you have called us to be gods” (John 10:34). However, what he said means nothing else. Who is able to love all men, equally: the righteous and the sinner, the wise and the ignorant, the sane and the insane, the noble and the coward, the neighbor and the stranger, the friend and the foe?... I am not saying that what the Confessor said is impossible to do, but that it presupposes repentance, seeking the support of the saving grace. Who can, that is, who himself desires that God bestows this gift on him? Who is willing to give up his own flesh and blood? Who accepts to be like the Christ of God? Do not come out of the garden before you give an answer that pleases God!
