The Most Beautiful Poem

I was struck by the words of the poet Alfred Tennyson: “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of”. Confidence abounds in these words. We see it in every word, in every letter. There is no prayer without confidence; no testimony without experience. Who would believe these words? It is the experienced person who has discovered the action of God whether He gave or refrained, whether He answered or remained silent… Tennyson does not say that the minutes we spend with God are greater than our entire life. He does not say that prayer is the greatest gift that takes place in the world while it is free from it, but that it also frees us from it. In spite of his admitting that he is religiously inclined to agnosticism, I like to think that this is what he had meant. Would you say that I am weak before the poets? I would not be denying this weakness if I revealed my utter weakness before the act of prayer. This is, to me, the most beautiful poem ever written by a poet.
