The Lover of Money

He who loves money, cannot possibly have, in the temples of his brain, a place for human feelings! I will give you, as an example of that, what happened in Lazarus’ house on one of these similar days. There, Jesus was hosted by Lazarus and his two sisters. The joy was great, in the house and in all of Bethany, with the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Mary, Lazarus’ sister, came and poured from a phial of a very costly oil of spikenard on the feet of the honored guest. One person shunned the joy: Judas Iscariot, the traitorous disciple, about what was taking place. He said, brazenly: “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”. In this context, John, the Evangelist got himself into his text, and said what implied that Judas was a lying thief (12:3-6). It is not possible for the lover of money to think graciously about the conditions of the poor. Indeed, it is not possible!
