There are several things that leapt out at me upon reading the recent document in which Rome allowed the blessing of same-sex couples. I will mention three of them now. The first is to separate the blessing from the work of the Church Sacraments. The second is to separate it from God, given that the believer is capable of passing the blessing on to the others. Hastiness allows me not to comment on these two matters. Therefore, I will content myself with asking this question: If blessing takes place outside of worship as a purely human act, why then should a church issue a document about it? I am not objecting to the “humanism of the Church.” I am asking about the Church, which is the body of Christ, both God and man. Do I doubt the sincerity of Rome? No! What I am saying is allowed by my love for Her and for His Holiness the current Pope, whose visit Lebanon is still awaiting. There remains the third matter, related to the implementation of the document in which Rome is relying on: “the priests’ discernment and pastoral wisdom”. How will individual transgressions be controlled? The Living Church can re-examine Herself.
