Decades ago, it became popular for some, throughout Antioch, to boast about their spiritual fathers. This brought about, here and there, a fall into “the relationships fashion” and into “selfish ambitions and conceits”. I am not generalizing the wrath. I am not bypassing the manifestations of awareness. In spite of the wound left by this boastfulness, there are brethren who have had the grace to move towards the reconciliation, of the fact that the Church is a family. The light is greater! The embarrassing questions are besieging me. Do the spiritual fathers have anything to boast about? One of the hermit fathers, answering a young man who had relayed to him that he had seen his spiritual son in the market, said: “I, alone, know my spiritual sons”. In a sober-minded Church, we are more aware that it is impossible for us to grow, if our whole life is not a ministry the purpose of which is for us to learn that our Father is One (Matthew 23:9). We are all responsible for this growth.
