Ever since I committed myself to the life of the Church, I have tried to observe this fast. I believe that our life in Christ consists, entirely, of endeavors. What we ask for in the Church is always greater than our practice of it. We try, we keep doing what we are doing, because we believe that practice has its revelations...and its gifts. I am not pretending to be experienced, but I am revealing to you a conviction that there are two things, to which if we really adhere, they facilitate for us the completion of the fast. The first of them is to adhere to its prescribed prayers, and the second is to confirm in us the words of the Apostle: “food is for the stomach” (1 Corinthians 6:13). I do not only mean that we should confirm in us the fact that our need for food is always temporary, but also that we are able to get through this fast with a little bit of it. Always bear in mind that God is present in the need for Him, in prayer, asceticism and acts of love. Nothing He wants is accomplished without Him. This fast is to experience, once again, that life is exclusively in, by and from God.
