The Foundation of Marriage

I heard Metropolitan George Khodr say, in a public meeting: “the Christian who knows how to get married, is the monk”! You know that the monk vows celibacy, that is, chastity. In Christianity, the monk does not marry. What Metropolitan George said is a metaphor by which he meant that, basically, marriage is not founded on the man facing the woman, or vice versa, but rather on his facing God. This is marriage in Christianity, the meeting of two people in God. Marriage, apart from this foundation, is the union of two bodies. I do not want to turn to preaching. Yet, we all know that many among us have expelled God from their lives. They get married, and they have children. However, the foundations which they lay for themselves together, if God was included in them, He would be at their very end. How is God the foundation for married life? I would have liked to answer you: “if you have fear”. My answer remains the same if I said: “if, for us, God is the first and the last”.
