Some readers expect the writers in our Church to turn the pens that are in their hands into whips. I think zeal is to be extolled. However, my belief that we cannot be renewed unwillingly makes me view this expectation with great caution. I am not accusing anyone of regarding reform as a purely human act. In our Churches, we are not in need of someone to teach us that it is impossible for our reform to take place without God and His saving graces. Are those who are seeking a whip suffering from a bitter reality that they hope to change? I think so. I have nothing for them (to tell them) today other than to keep themselves in the service of what they aspire to, that is, to bring together the two poles of a good life, namely, to proclaim the Truth, and to be faithful workers in its field. How do we always remind ourselves that this time, in which we live, like any other, needs nothing as much as it needs work, and people who remind us, by word and deed, that we are all here for the sake of a Church for which Jesus died in order for us to rise and be renewed? This is the best reminder.
