Obeying the Goodness

Mahmoud Darwish’s recommendation to President Mahmoud Abbas was to tell those who are occupying their land: “take my mother’s land by the sword, still, I will not sign my name to sell even a single inch of the thistles around the corn fields”. The recommendation is valid for all the peers of the two Mahmouds in this world, and even for anyone who has authority over an inch of land in his own country, whether it is an endowment or a personal property. Selling endowments to the occupier is a disgrace that no repentance can erase! It is like selling one's own soul! The land is ours. The land is within us. Mahmoud Darwish had also said: “I am the land, embodied”. The recommendation is as clear as a bright morning. He did not say: “Take my father’s land”, but rather “my mother’s land”. The mother is inhabited by her children! As for the “inch of thistles”, that is, what you would not bemoan if it got lost or burned, even this is not for sale! Poets, who are inhabited by love for their countries to the end, have the right to recommend. The new history is born from those who obey the goodness that good people recommend to us. May God have mercy on he who has recommended. May the recommendation endure.
