Is any human being truly alone? A few days ago, a friend of mine, who lived alone, passed away to God. She had had her fill of years, and she departed. When I learned of her passing, I immediately went to her house. Some of her relatives and neighbors were there. We prayed together for her repose. She was lying on her bed with her hands crossed on her chest, as if someone had informed her that her hour had come. Am I relying on the image of demise in order to confirm my belief that no human being is alone in the universe?“I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20), is a promise the plural form of which does not prevent us from seeing that it extends to every person on this earth. These were Jesus' final words, the words with which He intended to reveal that His departure to the Father will, once again, start, with His Holy Spirit, to permeate our history. At my friend's funeral, the priest delighted me by saying, in his homily, that God is with her.
