The poor are a mystery. Arise to them, you will find that Christ has preceded you, you will find Him waiting for you either with them, or at their place, or in them. Amazing is this mystery, that of Christ and the poor. Wherever they are, He is to be found; and wherever He is, they are to be found; in the sense that, if you come to Him before coming to them, you will see Him, Himself, walking you to them. There is no poor without Christ, and there is no Christ without poor. This is not a reinforcement of poverty, but of the love that enriches the heart, that exalts life, the love that obliterates all poverty in us first, then in the others. Christ is the relief of the distress of the world to the end of eternity. No one is like Him. Have you heard of a God stretched out in the flesh of people, all people, Who is one with the hungry, the sick and the neglected... (Matthew 25:40)? Life without Christ is meaningless. He is the meaning of the mystery, He Himself is the Mystery of Mysteries.
