My friend Mohammad

Before Lebanon entered into a crazy war in 1975, Sudan, with its white goodness, was present among us in the novels of Al-Tayyib Salih and the poetry of Muhammad al-Fayturi… and in some of its people who come to Beirut seeking work or education. Like faces, things change. Yet, wars do not end. Today, Sudan is at the forefront of our news with its war, in which the loser is “I,” as a young Sudanese man said in an e-mail he addressed to his two brothers who are fighting on “two different fronts”. My concern is for the people in Sudan, especially for my friend Mohammad, who manages a building in our area. Two months ago, Muhammad traveled to his country. He told me: “it is a visit”. However, he has not returned yet. Mohammad was a man of peace. His stature, strong like the Blue Nile, does not conceal his kindness and his brokenness before the voice of his grandmother, who talks to him every day. Until we meet again, be at peace, Muhammad. May God save your country from the insanity of this war.
