Father Antoine Melki

The passing of Father Antoine Melki, the parish priest of Aafsadiq in the Diocese of Tripoli and Koura, has deeply saddened me. He left us suddenly, without a by-your-leave or a word of farewell. Death is treacherous in many ways, leaving behind only separations and losses. Indeed, Father Antoine's departure was a significant loss not only to his family, Church, and those who had close and friendly ties with him…, but also for all those who love the Word that he dedicated his life to with known diligence. Father Antoine knew that serving the Word, whether in traditional or modern forms, gathers people around you from near and far, some of whom become friends while others choose paths that please them. The word is a realm of free consciousness in which distinctiveness does not prevent distinction. He once told me after a discussion on a matter we disagreed on, "You are in my prayers". This reflects the richness of the great ones who, no matter how firm they are in their opinions, keep their hearts filled with God's love. This is a word of consolation to his loved ones and ours: death thinks it is victorious. Yet you do know the Victor. Christ is risen!
