Church and Poverty

Before we entered this fast, my friend Ibrahim Rizk handed me Dr. Rupen Das' book, “The Church and Poverty”. Eloquent faces want you better. I liked many things about the book, of which I am mentioning two: 1- the human dimension of reading the Word. This is due to the condescension of the Word which has implanted in Man, regardless of his gender, culture and environment…, what makes him contribute to the clarification of its meanings. 2- That its author, who is well-versed in biblical and human thought… has not presented us with a purely theoretical text, but a practical one as well. This, for example, appears in his asking his reader, in more than one chapter, questions that prompt him to repeat to himself thoughts that he had overlooked, and to strive to fight the sloth, greed and injustice that lie behind the poverty unfolding before him. In reading the book, and for the sake of the gold that is in it, the open-minded reader can let go of possible disagreements with its author, and hear God say: “there need be no poor people among you” (Deuteronomy 15:4).
