One of my projects was to write a book about those whom my friend Ghazi Akl calls “domestic helpers”. Until now, several obstacles have prevented me from implementing the project, like the obstacle of language difference thwarting real communication, most girls’ constrained freedom, and the difficulty of finding a group of girls who accept to allow a stranger into the details of their private lives… I wrote several times about female helpers I knew. However, what I wrote were quick impressions about some of them in which they had no say. What I am telling you about is something else. What I want is for them to write on my papers by themselves, so that I may know, from them, about what they wish to reveal, about the poverty, the education, the grief, the joy, the love, love of God, love of the beloved and of the abandoned family… to know about the regrets, the wounds, the tearful nights, and about Lebanon and its people… I hope to see my project under implementation.
