A Litany for the Rulers

In the congregational prayers of our Church, there is one of several litanies in which we pray for “the rulers of this country and for their support in every good deed…”. I would not be going against my belief in God’s ability to perform miracles if I mention to you that, every time I face this litany, I drag myself into reciting it. Believe me. I do not think that prayer is due to those who deserve it, but rather that I have not yet reached complete freedom in performing it. When it is said that this world is a region of death, I see people pointing fingers of accusation at God, may His Glory be sanctified! Do they believe that things on earth, good or bad, happen by His will? Most people do not distinguish between what God knows and what He wants. God wants nothing but our salvation. Am I saying to the leaders in my Church: "let us cancel this litany?". No, but I am saying to everyone who holds a position on earth: "you are responsible for doing good. Be a prayer, or leave".
