I heard him say to some of our friends at a gathering that brought them together: “Fasting is a phase. Those who are conscious among us do not let it pass without scooping up what it gives us out of its bounty”. These words prompted me to think about what fasting bestows each day. I settled on many things, of which I chose you three today. First, it gives us itself. It is my opportunity that reveals to me that I do not live by bread alone, but by God Who loves me. The second thing, it heals our lives by prompting us to lift up our hearts daily to God in the midst of the Church. It is not true that God requires me to meet Him in His Church some days a year. Prayer in the Church is my homeland every day, my heaven on earth. The third thing, it reminds us that we are responsible to cultivate on the paths of our existence, that “God is love”. My day would be a gem of a day if I could extend this love to one person, at least to one person, every day. This is of God’s bounty upon us to let us hear His voice through the brethren.
