A Better Day

I had told you, before, about the culture of the beautiful girls May, Mira, and Marianne Mitri. The older two gifted me with three novels. I was tardy in “unwrapping the gift” for a purpose I adopt in reading. I will tell you. In my house I have a bookcase in which I put the books I have read. The new books, which I have not yet read, I stack up on one of its shelves, with the newest always at the bottom. I allow myself a few exceptions, books that hurry me to move them upwards. What brought nearer the time of reading one of the three novels, Maxim Gorky’s “Mother”, was an anger that overwhelmed me over our deep slumber in Lebanon, when, a few days ago, we started having “a sectarian timing”. The novel did not cure me of anger. However, it has extended my sight to a better day. Is there a more effective salvation for our country than a people whose culture gives it a “louder voice” (Mother, p.349 )?
