They do not cast me back to an irretrievable past, but rather stir up in me a childhood that never leaves us! In my youth, two people made poetry my daily companion, a neighbor of ours and my mother. I remember them prayerfully, especially on this World Poetry Day. Our neighbor was enamored with Lebanese zajal (folk poetry), and he broadcasted its performances from a cassette player in his shop to our neighborhood every day from morning till evening. Not a single day passed without zajal. As for my mother, she used to light up our home at night with stories that were not devoid of poetry. I will be honest with you. In my youth, I attempted to write poetry; but, I failed. I came to realize that, in poetry and literature in general, I am a notebook whose pages are open to the true writers. Gaby Daaboul always prevails over my notebook, and over my eyes. What is this relationship between words and water? Gaby knows the relationship since his childhood.
