He knows Lebanon. He lived in it a little more than the years he spent away from it. He did not explain himself. He said nothing about what he knew about his country. He said nothing about us, about their house, about ours\u2026 he just looked confused! One of those who were with us kept up with him. He answered him: \u201cyes, this is Lebanon\u201d. He did not soothe the child\u2019s bewilderment, but rather he drew him a lasting token about what he should know of his country. He did not literally tell him that Lebanon is the people in it who love you. However, this is what he seemed to mean. What do you want a visiting child to know about a country whose authority has been usurped, whose people have been plundered, and whose elders are preoccupied with their farces? Yesterday, my grandson and his older sister slept over in our house. It was past midnight. I asked each of them to climb into his bed before the electricity gets cut off. Bewildered, he asked me if I was speaking seriously!
