I will give you, as an example of that, what happened in Lazarus\u2019 house on one of these similar days. There, Jesus was hosted by Lazarus and his two sisters. The joy was great, in the house and in all of Bethany, with the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Mary, Lazarus\u2019 sister, came and poured from a phial of a very costly oil of spikenard on the feet of the honored guest. One person shunned the joy: Judas Iscariot, the traitorous disciple, about what was taking place. He said, brazenly: \u201cWhy was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?\u201d. In this context, John, the Evangelist got himself into his text, and said what implied that Judas was a lying thief (12:3-6). It is not possible for the lover of money to think graciously about the conditions of the poor.
